Akufo-Addo Gov't To 'Scale Down' La Gen. Hosp. Because 'Funding Withheld By Sponsors' – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

The La General Hospital would have to be "scale down a bit" because the funding for its reconstruction has been withheld by the sponsors, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has announced in parliament.

Making a statement on the floor of the house on Tuesday, 7 November 2023, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said Ghana's tottering economy that necessitated an IMF bailout, is to blame for the withholding of the funds by the sponsors.

“Mr. Speaker, what has happened is that after the engagement with the IMF, funding from those sources that parliament approved of, the funding has been withheld by the sponsors," the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs explained.

"Mr Speaker, until the nation is given a clean bill of health by the IMF, it is going to be difficult for the funding to be released," he noted, adding: "This is why the government now wants to situate it within the context of Agenda 111, and that will mean that the facility will have to be scaled down a bit."

The La General Hospital was downed in July 2020 over structural defects.

The following month, the president cut sod for its reconstruction but that has not happened up to today.
